I live in El Paso Texas, the desert southwest. Can you help me identify a bird I am seeing in my backyard?
This bird is about the size of a mockingbird. It is a dusty brown or even gray all over. Long, sharp beak and yellow eyes. It digs for grubs in my backyard. (I can even see that it listens, with its head cocked to one side, before it digs!) It usually comes up with some bug. Any help out there?

Have you ever seen a mocking bird? Becuase it sounds like a mocking bird. My friend had a mocking bird nest in her tree. I never seen it but I think she told me what it looked like. Its gone now. I hope these links help:

Hi from Silver City. We share many of the same birds.
This is either a Brewer’s Blackbird, a Common or Great Tailed Grackle or even a Sage Thrasher. All of these would hunt for insects in the ground.
Get a copy of Birds of New Mexico – great ID book for birds in our areas.

It certainly sounds like a thrasher. There are 2 types in your area. The Curve-billed has a spotted front and actually a less curved bill. The Crissal has a more curved bill and an orangish spot under the tail.
